Henry Fong

Henry Fong is a Canadian Artist that was born in Hong Kong. (I'm not making these connections between artists up, I swear!) He is a concept artist who works both with companies and as a freelancer. He was the costume designer for the movie "Death Race". (I admit to seeing a few bits of this movie from living with a car crazy brother, I think they were more than enough...well, the concepts are fun to see) He is also doing costume design for "The Phantom" which is supposed to come out sometime next year.




Well, honestly, it was really hard to find information on this guy. Maybe he's just not that well known yet, or maybe it was because of the millions of Henry Fongs that came up in google. Anyhow, here's the paintings that I found that made me even want to mention this guy. They are illustrations for some book, I think... the info is in french.

Dongyun Lee

You don't want to miss this guy. Although he went to school and worked for a while in Korea, Dongyun Lee is now over in the United States, in New York. He does lots of magazine illustrations, for both english magazines and french magazines. He really recently, had a show of his work in New York called Eternal Flow.

He also published a book of images called "Hurt". It amazingly awesome, even though the style is a little different from his illustration work. It was published as an issue of 400, numbered and signed, and they are for sale on his website for just $25. Beautiful stuff.



He also does traditional work using digital as a tool. You can read about the details in this interview.

Sam Weber

I wrote about this artist in my two artist paper, but I think you should all know about him, so Ta-Da. Sam Weber. Sam is a Canadian artist now living in new york. His paintings start off in traditional mediums, but then he uses the computer to work them over and add certain effects. I believe the paint smear textures are added in digitaly, like the one on the vampires arm.



Sam Weber illustrates business magazine articles, with illustrations that are still wicked cool, and book covers, amoung other things. He also did a series of illustrations for the soul pepper theatre posters that are well worth looking at. Right Here.

His website is at www.sampaints.com and he changes the stuff he has up there often, so check it out for more great slightly morbid art.

Doing Something a Little Different

So, from here on out, mostly because I wasn't that interested or motivated to write about anything else... I'm going to be doing updates on artists, (mostly contemporary) that I think are interesting or worth looking at. Some of them you might know already, some are new. Some are illustrators (most, hopefully) some aren't. So, if all goes well, you might find out about someone cool.

So, since you are reading this, I am assuming you already know that this is my blog er, online journal for Alex's Into to the Discipline class. I am supposed to write something new and witty here, every week, and hopefully the delay in posts will not be habit forming. I believe I have picked the ugliest possible layout from the presets, and am planning to use that as a reminder to make some little art to snaz it up sometime. And practice html. Web presence seminar next semester has me all excited.

On the topic of dinosaurs... this seems like an awesome way to make a living.
